Melvin for Senate
Melvin Tangonan is a second year undergraduate student majoring in Political Science and Public Health and minoring in Education. Melvin first became involved in the ASUC in the Fall of 2017 an an intern in the Office of former Senator* Rizza Estacio. In Melvin’s second year in the ASUC, he has served as the Director for Pilipinx Outreach and Development in the Office of the President*. He is excited to bring all that he has learned to address the lack of representation for the Pilipinx Community in the ASUC. Melvin is excited to run for ASUC Senate because he sees issues with centralized academic resources, funding of student organizations in and out of the Pilipinx Community, food accessibility for students and the difficulty for student organizations to book events in the Student Union. He believes that working with the ASUC and its resources will make an impact in improving the experiences of students as a whole. On campus, Melvin is a member of the Rally Committee, a Community Liaison for the Pilipinx Basketball Association, and works as a member of the Event Staff in the MLK Student Union.

How We’ll Get it Done
I. Pilipinx Organization Representation
Increase financial and space support for the Pilipinx Organization through the ASUC and University
Equity and Inclusion: Advocate to the University to provide spaces for other communities, like the Pilipinx Community
Long Term: Go beyond the senator position and advocate to the Chancellor and Vice Chancellors in the topic of Deferred Maintenance. CA is looking for a bond to get money for the renovations of Campus Buildings. I hope to advocate for an increase of spaces for the Pilipinx Organizations on campus.
Access to Academic Resources
Create a centralized resource bank, online through students berkeley emails, for the Pilipinx Community where they can access academic, mental health and events resources. In addition, stay updated with work that the ASUC is doing for the Community.
II. Food Accessibility for Students
Support more food access to EBT (Electronic Benefit Transfer) users
Support the work with Cal Dining to meet the EBT authorization standards
Create a resource guide for students to know where they can use their EBT and have them access it through email
Support the reforming Meal Plans for students
Increase Flex Points for students on the standard meal plan, so they can have the sufficient amount of meals on a given day
III. Event Policies and Operations
Reform the Major Events Policy on Cultural Performances
The time it takes to notify campus of events from a six weeks decrease to 4 weeks
Help alleviate the process for Registered Student Organizations to run Cultural Shows in Zellerbach
Improve Administrative support and accessibility for Student Union Venues
Improve space reservation system for Performance Venues by reducing financial burdens on events by student organizations through CACSSF
Expand catering options for students who utilize Student Union venues
